Are prescription drugs addictive?

Prescription drugs, particularly benzodiazepines, can be highly addictive and as a result are frequently misused, with individuals taking higher doses than prescribed, or combining their usage with other drugs and / or alcohol to achieve altered states of mind. A supervised prescription detox is strongly recommended for anyone who is misusing any form of prescription drugs, as attempting to stop using them without medical assistance can result in extremely uncomfortable and distressing side effects, which can include seizures, hallucinations and chronic fatigue. Withdrawal symptoms will be minimised or will not occur at all by having a supervised prescription detox. We also offer all clients counselling throughout the prescription detox process, to ensure that all psychological issues are addressed, offering the best chance of permanent recovery from prescription medication addiction.

What are the signs of addiction to prescription medication?

The most common symptoms of prescription medication addiction will appear when the individual attempts to stop too quickly by themselves. Withdrawal symptoms, which can occur without a supervised prescription detox, include anxiety, rapid mood swings, headaches, shaking, sweating, palpitations, insomnia, and in severe cases, seizures, vomiting and suicidal thoughts. For these reasons, a benzo, painkiller or anti depressant detox should be undertaken only in a safe environment with ongoing medical supervision. We provide a confidential service to people who need a prescription detox, offering medical expertise along side group and individual counselling, which deals with the psychological reasons for the addiction. If you are concerned for yourself, or for a relative or friend, speak to someone in confidence by calling 0845 686 0824.

What is involved in an inpatient prescription detox programme?

In the case of benzo and anti depressant detoxes our team of doctors would look at reducing the dose of the prescription drug or drugs, over a period of time whilst providing intensive psycholtherapy to minimise the psychological withdrawal symptoms.. Depending on the length of usage and the dose of the medication being taken, the prescription detox typically lasts between a few days and a few weeks. In order to devise the right detox, we consider carefully the length of time the individual has been using the prescription medication, how much they have been using, and whether there have been any notable changes in how much they have been using over time. The detox we create in most cases ensures that little, if any, withdrawal symptoms are felt by the individual. If they do experience any discomfort, we can adjust the dose applied in their detox, so as to ensure the comfort of the client.

An opiate detox however has many additional options in terms of detox medications subutex and britlox can both have good effect when treating opiate withdrawal symptoms. All of our detox programmes are tailor made to suit the requirements of the patient.

We have a very good success rate in helping people to come of antidepressant, painkiller and benzo medications. We assess all clients to see if they are clinically suitable to come off their antidepressant medication, then incorporate it into the prescription detox, the alcohol detox or the drug detox programme they are on. We have also treated cases of dependence upon cough mixture. In all cases, we provide intensive counselling to ease emotional distress.
